As a passionate photographer / video producer, and curator of my fine art work, I’m thrilled to share the news that Photo Basel, Switzerland’s premier fine art photography fair, is about to go live.

An essential destination for anyone serious about photographic art, and celebrating its 10th anniversary, this remarkable event gathers 39 galleries from 15 countries, presenting over 450 works by more than 150 talented artists. It’s a vibrant, inclusive space where the dialogue around photographic creativity flourishes, welcoming both industry insiders and newcomers alike.

Gundeldinger Feld Basel, Werke-und-Spiele (Work and Play) series by Sou Vai Keng + Martin Zeller.

Together with writer and artist Sou Vai Keng, Martin Zeller forms the creative duo behind Werke und Spiele (Works and Games), a project reflecting urban transformation through large-scale photography and poetic text.

Photo Basel is more than just a fair; it’s a showcase of the cutting edge in fine art photography. The curated sections, like “Beyond Photography” and “Novum,” highlight innovative practices that push the boundaries of the medium. In “Beyond Photography,” you’ll discover works that go beyond traditional images, exploring mixed media, experimental printing, and even three-dimensional formats. I’m especially excited about the works by artists redefining what photographic art can be, including:

The “Novum” section offers a glimpse into the future, featuring works that are either debuting at Photo Basel or created exclusively for the event. For example, Chris Tille’s exploration of light, inspired by Impressionist painters, or Anna Lehmann-Brauns’ compelling new series on the human form, these pieces have never been shown before and are a must-see for anyone interested in the evolving landscape of photographic art.

Odermatt’s work is characterized by a sober, objective aesthetic that nonetheless unfolds remarkable narrative depth.

In partnership with Annabelle magazine, the fair also champions female photographers, showcasing their diversity and strength—an important step toward greater visibility.

Additionally, the special project at Franck Areal, featuring Martin Zeller’s large-format photographs of industrial sites, exemplifies the dialogue between contemporary photography and architectural history that I find particularly inspiring.

The performance – as an act of self-staging, of physical presence and performativity – is the central motif of this new body of work.

Set in the historic Volkshaus Basel, just a short walk from Art Basel, Photo Basel offers a rich cultural experience, with cafes, a restaurant, and a beer garden adding to the atmosphere. As a fine art photographer who easily becomes bored with gereric fine art photography often led by words over creative substance, I see Photo Basel as one of the best photography art fairs, where discovery of the best fine art photography practitioners is simply a joy.

Whether you’re a collector, an artist, or simply passionate about photography, explore this extraordinary event and immerse yourself in the best of photographic art.

Located at Franck Areal, Horburgstrasse 105, 4057 Basel, Photo Basel 2025 runs from June 13 to June 27, 2025.
